Driveway in Hythe, Southampton

Driveway, footpaths, drainage and hard standing in Southampton

This family, quite local to where we are based in Hythe, Southampton, had asked us to take a look at their driveway and front garden area to see if we could think of a solution to their drainage problems as well as general access issues. They informed us that being on the bottom of a hill the street side storm drains would sometimes not be able to handle the flow of rain water down the hill and that the poorly installed council kerb side that divided their property line from the road allowed the overflow onto their property. At best this caused the front garden to be boggy and at worst it would spill over into their garage. They were also quite over grown with trees and shrubs that had gotten too excessive.

We came up with a plan to provide walkways and cut back over grown trees and shrubs and install a driveway that would absorb some over flow from the street. We also added a soak-away and linear drainage as a further measure to channel water away safely.

Stage 1 – Clearing green waste

We removed a few shrubs and some dead stumps and cut back trees gingerly in order to do no harm but also tackle the excessively low over hanging foliage. We didn’t want to do away with the greenery entering the property entirely so our intention was to “manage” it appropriately.

Stage 2 – Demolition and excavation

We then demolished and disposed of approx 15 tons of concrete to allow us to begin our measurements for the dig out and sub base installation for the driveway and golden fossil sandstone patios and walkways.

Stage 3 – Levelling, marking, more excavation

Levels were attained and string lines were installed to mark the driveway’s borders. Depths were assessed and excavation of spoil was begun. Another 20 tons approximately of extraneous spoil was excavated to enable the installation of a geotextile membrane and type 1 MOT limestone scalpings.

Stage 4 – Installation of concrete edging, geotextile membrane, beginning to deposit type 1 MOT

Concrete edging was installed and scalpings compaction began in layers. Hard standing areas were then marked out.

Stage 5 – Installing hard standings, linear drainage channel and jointing

Golden fossil sandstone pavers were laid onto a 4:1 grit sand and cement bedding layer at depths of approximately 40-60mm. All stones were painted with SBR to aid in adhesion and to prevent cementitious permeation through the sandstone. Azpect easy joint mushroom jointing compound was pointed into the joints of the sandstone.
A linear drainage channel was bedded in between the end of the driveway and the beginning of the patio adjacent to the front door. Linear drainage was fed to a soakaway.

Stage 6 – Final compaction of type 1 MOT limestone, adding decorative red granite aggregate

The final 75mm of limestone scalping were added and compacted. For extra binding, several bags of cement dust were deposited over the final layer of limestone. After this was done approximately 8 tons of red granite aggregate were deposited and raked out over the driveway.

6 Month checkup!!

At the beginning of spring after the particularly wet Southampton winter of 2016/17 we emailed the customers to ask how things are going. They told us they were very happy with their decision to get the work done. They did inform us that the council had not yet sorted out the problems with the storm drains and road side kerb and the street was still flooding onto their property but the drainage was handling it and the were very pleased.

Here is the review they left us on checkatrade

“Excellent work. They really cared about the quality and look of the final result, they didn’t rush, took the time to get things right, planned their work well, took care of all the little details and were happy to discuss ideas and options. Also stuck to their original price and were a pleasure to deal with throughout.”

Fencing in Hythe – Bespoke Fencing Project

Fencing in Hythe - before

This was a rather unorthodox project, constructing fencing in Hythe, Southampton.

The customer expressed a desire for a very solid, long lasting fence but didn’t really like the idea of looking at concrete. He wanted something strong that provided privacy but was also decorative! Having previously completed some fencing in Hythe, we were pleased that the customer had considered us for this project.

This fence location was difficult as there were numerous tree stumps growing through tarmac and concrete. Stump removal or concrete removal are not too costly or problematic on their own. However, when you mix the two they can require considerable time and effort and of course the cost goes up!

Fencing in Hythe - The finished job

We came up with a cost effective solution!

We opted for a universal concrete post fencing construction that was stepped with the slope. This system enabled us to position our posts at distances, within reason, of our choosing. Thus avoiding stumps and allowing us to just cut the stumps down to ground level and out of site.

The fence was trellis topped and this was also stepped and curved with the driveway. The concrete fence post were hidden behind the fencing on the neighbours side.

We were really happy with the distinct look of the fence and the customer was too!

Here is the review he left for us on checkatrade.

“Very happy with the work carried out. Will be my first call when I want further fencing done.”

Street side fencing in Blackfield

Fencing in Blackfield - Before we started

Fencing in Blackfield – The job ahead

We have done a lot of fencing in Blackfield recently. Having already worked for several of the homeowners in this street, we were pleasantly surprised to get a call asking for a quote to replace this very large fence. It was in a poor state of repair and parts of it had been taken over by shrubs and self seeded trees.

Our first job was to remove all of the old fence bays and take them away for recycling. There was then considerable hedging and self seeded trees that required clearing, stumps that needed grinding down, and then all the waste needed to be taken for recycling.

Installing the Fence

Installation time

These customers required a fence with concrete fittings as it would last a lot longer and also be more secure than the standard, all timber, close board fencing. All 41 posts were buried at a depth of two feet and all had to be broken into concrete due to the kerbed edging at the roadside.

The feathers used to make up the bays were 5 inches wide. All timber was Douglas fir, which had been pressure treated, leaving a neutral wood appearance. All panels were provided by a saw mill that uses a sustainable source of timber.

The finished project

We ended up installing approximately 400 feet of bay fencing. This was all securely held in place with concrete gravel boards and centre stumps. A standard height of 6 feet for the entirety of the fence length was continued throughout. Road access was maintained at all times and the build, and all work areas were thoroughly tidied and cleaned on completion. The project took 3 men precisely 2 working weeks to complete!

Here’s what the clients had to say…

“Good job. 100% improvement of fencing along boundary of St Georges Court Blackfield.”

“Very pleasant workers, did a brilliant job under difficult conditions.”

“This was a considerable project which was handled competently and with great care and consideration. Very pleased with outcome.”

“Fantastic job done to a high quality standard. Right on budget, right on time. We highly recommend this company.”

“Work started and finished on time and completed to a high standard. They maintained road access all during the works.”

Landscaping – Garden Makeover

A customer from Lyndhurst, New Forest needed some help with their garden. The garden makeover comprised of clearance, hedge work, fencing, planting, turfing, hard standing, steps and a minor alteration to the current timber structure.

The customer wanted to make the garden pretty but minimalist and functional. She cared for a blind and deaf, aged gentleman and the steps had to be deep but not high whilst also not encroaching on her pre-existing briquette footpath.

Garden Structures

This customer wanted to do something for his daughter in order to tidy up her garden. The job required some jet washing and bleaching of patio and a bit of re jointing. They also wanted the
wall to be demolished to accommodate a veranda, picket fence and gates to keep the dog secure.

We received a glowing review on CheckaTrade for this work.

Here are 2 examples of clearances we have undertaken

This example in Southampton city centre was a simple “does what is says on the tin” clearance. The customer was from U.S.A and at the time of work being carried out was residing there. As with all our projects we provided him a live link to his project folder where we updated photos daily so he could log online and view them at his discretion.

Here is the review this gentleman left for us

“I asked A and J Montana and four other companies for a quotation to clear a terraced property garden in the Polygon area of Southampton, only A and J Montana and one other were the only ones to respond. Andres responded immediately and in a couple of days had visited the property and provided a formal quotation. They completed the work to an excellent standard. They provided fantastic project management feedback and photos so I could see how the work was progressing. This was essential to me as I live in the USA. They did a great job and I would highly recommend them.”

This is a more complex example of a clearance in Totton with a budget makeover afterwards.

Here is the review we received for it… “A& J Montana provided us with a first class service during the landscape renovation of a buy to sell property on our portfolio. They provided economic and comprehensive solutions to making good the land within our allocated budget and were absolutely sterling in their reliability throughout the project. This is not the first time we have used their services and we will be undoubtedly using them again.” 10/10

Jet Washed Driveway

This customer was fed up with looking out of her window to her drab, algae and lichen ridden block paved driveway so she asked us if we could do anything about it. We performed a small repair to some blocks that were slipping away at the bottom of her footpath and washed and re sanded the driveway and footpath. The finish was close to flawless and she was delighted!

Rural fence & gates

This customer expressed an interest in having an appropriate fence built for her property boundary. We advised on estate gates but hand built a post and rail fence as the property was semi rural. Extra thick 5 inch peaked posts were used to add a robust look to the fencing and planed all round timber rails to lean slightly towards contemporary whilst keeping the rural feel. All timber was hand mortised on site and previously pressure treated.
